HOUSTON – The 2025 Concacaf Gold Cup awaits its champion, with Mexico, the all-time winners in the tournament with nine trophies, taking on the United States in the long-awaited Final on Sunday at NRG Stadium in Houston, Texas, USA.
The defending champions sit at the doors of history, with El Tricolor having the opportunity to clinch a second consecutive title and overall 10th Gold Cup crown.
Manager Javier Aguirre and his players previewed the decisive match at Saturday’s Media Day.
Head Coach Javier Aguirre:
This is my third time being at a Gold Cup as a coach. I know what winning the Gold Cup means. We take it very seriously, the team is eager, and the fans want to finish this story well.
The final against the United States was the toughest challenge we could encounter. I hope to close out this last match well.
Forward Raúl Jiménez:
We have the opportunity to keep our status as the champions. We won the last one and want to keep that.
USA is a really good team, but we have a good team and really good players to do our best game and win the trophy.
Finals are there to be won. We have to give it our all. We have to do what we know how to do best. We've improved since the start of the cup, and I think we have the individual qualities, and also the collective strength to clinch the trophy.
Forward Santiago Giménez:
Javier Aguirre is like our grandfather. He's a man of great experience. We listen to him a lot, we follow his advice. He shows us affection, we show him affection. The coaching staff with the players, we're a family, and we owe it to Javier.
I'm working hard, I'm working to keep growing… Another thing that gives me peace of mind is that we're winning. That's the most important thing. At the end of the day, we're the last Gold Cup champions, we won the Nations League, and today we're fighting for a second title.
Defender César Montes:
We've been showing good defensive solidity, and keeping clean sheets gives us a lot of confidence.
Fortunately, I've had the chance to score. I think these have been games where the opponents sit back very deeply, and it's difficult to open them up.
We knew one of our strengths was set pieces, both defensively and offensively... I'm happy to be helping the team, and the priority is to keep a clean sheet."
Midfielder Alexis Vega:
We have a huge responsibility… We want to be two-time champions, and to do that, we have to earn it tomorrow. It's going to be a super important match, and we hope we can come out with a win.
We have a lot of fellow countrymen here. We're going to try to put on a good performance for them. Their support is crucial. It's a plus that motivates us on the field. Tomorrow, we want to give them something to cheer about and take this trophy back to Mexico.
Goalkeeper Luis Malagón:
We're motivated. We set out from the beginning to get to this point, and we're one day away from achieving our goal. We're aware of what's at stake, especially given the opponent we have in front of us, but we're excited to win another title.
What's happening to me is incredible. I just became a father, that changed my life… It excites me, because today my strength, my enthusiasm, my being—everything is for her. Today, everything at stake is also for my teammates, because we've created a family and we have that desire to grow and always give our best for Mexico.
