Lionel Messi scored a stunning goal at Chase Stadium and caught the world's attention on MLS Sunday Night Soccer, but Inter Miami couldn't hold on to their away lead against Toronto FC and squandered the opportunity to move closer to the top against one of the Eastern Conference's weakest teams.

Toronfo FC even opened the scoring when Bernardeschi received the ball on the edge of the box and turned with great quality to hit the back of the net in the 46th minute. Shortly after returning from the dressing room, Inter Miami snatched an equalizer after Segovia constructed a fine move in midfield and laid the ball off for Lionel Messi to dominate and hit into the right corner.

However, Inter Miami were unable to consolidate their recovery in the MLS after losing the first leg of the Concacaf Champions Cup quarter-final to LAFC. Despite their intensity and plenty of attacking production (xG 2.63), the team coached by Javier Mascheranno managed to score just one goal.

The Argentine coach still doesn't seem to have fully adapted to the North American club calendar. Many fans rightly criticized the lack of need to count on Lionel Messi, Jordi Alba, and Luis Suárez for many minutes against Toronto. The team's main player, veteran Lionel Messi, was on the pitch for 90 minutes.

Lionel Messi continues to make history at MLS

At least Major League Soccer's Matchday 7 served as an opportunity for Lionel Messi to break the record set by Gonzalo Higuaín for the most goal contributions in club history at Inter Miami. The Argentine now has 44 goal contributions in 29 regular-season matches, with 24 goals and 20 assists.

Since winning the League's Cup in his first season, Messi was instrumental in the 2024 Supporters' Shield-winning campaign by breaking the record for single-season points. The Argentine has also won the Landon Donovan MLS MVP award.
