Mee signs new Brentford contract | OneFootball

Brentford defender Ben Mee has signed a new one-year contract.

Mee has made 58 appearances for the Bees since signing as a free agent in July 2022, 55 of which have come in the Premier League.

The experienced centre-back missed just one league game last season and helped Thomas Frank’s side keep 12 clean sheets.

He was named 2022/23 Supporters’ Player of the Year and his acrobatic strike in the 1-1 draw with Wolverhampton Wanderers in October 2022 - one of five goals he has scored for the club - was nominated for Goal of the Season.

Mee made a further 18 outings this term before suffering a season-ending ankle injury during the Bees’ 4-2 defeat to West Ham United in February.

“Ben was a really good signing in the summer of 2022,” said Brentford director of football Phil Giles.

“He was exactly what we needed at that point and deserved the accolades he got in his first season with us.

“He was unlucky with injuries last season but has been recovering well from the season-ending injury he got at West Ham, so we expect him to be taking part in pre-season one way or another.

“He is an important and popular member of the squad, so I’m really pleased he is with us next season too.”

Mee came through the academy at Manchester City, having been born and raised locally, and played for England up to under-21 level.

He made one EFL Cup appearance for City and had a loan spell at Leicester City in 2011. He then joined Burnley, initially on loan, and his career started to develop.

He spent the 2011/12 campaign on loan at Burnley and completed a permanent move in the summer of 2012.

He helped the Clarets win promotion to the Premier League twice – in 2014 and 2016 – and was a regular for them in the top tier.

He left Burnley having played more than 350 league games for them and approaching 400 in all competitions.
