There has been yet another development in the investigation involving leaders of AC Milan’s ultras group the Curva Sud, and it involves attempted murder.

According to SportMediaset, Daniele Cataldo – a trusted man of the Milan ultras leader Luca Lucci – was arrested for the attempted murder by gunshots on 12 April 2019, in the centre of Milan, of Enzo Anghinelli, another Milan ultra involved in drug proceedings.

Lucci himself – who has been in prison since September 30 – in the investigation into the Curvas of San Siro, is being investigated for complicity in attempted murder. The arrest came following the investigations of the Milan Flying Squad, coordinated by prosecutors Paolo Storari and Leonardo Lesti.

Anghinelli was seriously injured after an ambush in via Cadore, in the Porta Romana area. The ultra, who was in his car, stopped at the traffic light, was flanked by a scooter with two people on board (one of the two was Cataldo, according to the prosecution) who fired several shots, two of which hit him in the cheekbone and he miraculously survived, after being admitted to hospital. He was released only two months after the operation.

This morning the arrest warrant was carried out, in the investigation by the Flying Squad and the Public Prosecutor’s Office led by Marcello Viola, also based on the findings in recent years in the investigation into the Curvas, which on September 30 led to 19 arrests, including that of the leader of the Curva Sud Lucci.

Lucci, already in prison on charges of criminal association, is being investigated for complicity in attempted murder. The context of the ambush, from what has been learned, would have been a dispute within the world of the curves and in particular the Milanese Sud.

Around 15 years ago, Anghinelli was considered one of the ‘points of reference’ for drug trafficking in the city and had pleaded guilty in Milan to a three-year sentence for drug trafficking, for acts committed between April and July 2018.

Investigators had already investigated his ties with members of the Milanese fans at the beginning of the investigation into the attempted murder, with whom he had had disagreements already at the time, to the point of being the victim of a beating.

Luca Lucci, in a wiretap included in the investigation documents, spoke in 2023 of the ‘war conducted against him by Lombardi Giancarlo’, former head of the Curva Sud, in alliance with ‘Vottari Domenico, Anghinelli Enzo, Verga Alessandro and recently with Calaiò Nazzareno’, the latter recently convicted of drug trafficking.

If you need catching up on the Ultras scandal, we explained the situation in full in a recent Substack feature, while yesterday the Curva Sud finally broke their silence with a long statement hitting out at a media campaign against them.
