Mathys Tel has quickly earned a place in the hearts of Bayern fans thanks to his easy-going way of playing football and how well he’s identified with the club. Supporters will therefore be even more delighted at the news that the 18-year-old has now signed a new contract to keep him in Munich until 30 June 2029.
“I’m very happy. It means a lot to me. I’ve learned so much already here. When you play for Bayern, you want to win every title, you have to play with heart and energy,” Tel said after penning his new deal. The fan favourite also spoke about his special relationship with the supporters: “The fans are very important to me. Without them I wouldn’t be the player I am. They support me a lot.”

Tel came to Bayern from Rennes in summer 2022 at the age of 17, having made just 10 competitive appearances for the French club’s first team. The Reds were signing an attacker with a lot of promise. In his 20 months on the books in Bavaria, Tel has since developed into a fixture of the team.
“Mathys has enjoyed amazing development in his time with us,” stressed CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen. Board member for sport Max Eberl added about the club’s No.39: “You often forget that Mathys is only 18. He’s already played so many games, has had made amazing progress, has created special moments.” Eberl also stated: “But he’s still only 18, obviously still has a lot to learn and has the potential to develop further. We’re pleased we can carry on along this road with him.”
Mathys Tel has quickly become a fan favourite at Bayern.
The teenager has made 57 competitive appearances to date in Bayern colours, including in all eight Champions League fixtures this season, scoring 13 goals. “He’s progressed in a great way both as a player and a person. He can already speak good German and really identifies with the club. He’s an incredibly positive guy. It’s no coincidence that he’s already a fan favourite. He gives his all for the club and would run through fire for Bayern,” enthused sporting director Christoph Freund.
Tel’s career has been constantly on the up. His extension until 2029 is an important sign from Bayern, both internally and externally. “It has to be possible to lead Bayern Munich successfully, to titles, but at the same time allowing development,” said Eberl in his unveiling press conference on the subject of youth. “It’s a clear sign of the way we want to go, backing players like this,” Freund added of Tel’s extension.
Mathys Tel has scored seven goals already this season for Bayern, including two in the Champions League.
Tel now has over five more years on his contract in Munich. “He’s a small part of our plan for the future for how we want to refresh Bayern in the long term,” said Dreesen. “He can become the face of Bayern to an extent. We’re pleased we can carry on along this road with him,” added Eberl.
