Manchester United Women eased into the quarter finals of the FA Cup with a comfortable 6-0 victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Wolves started off brightly and had the ball in a few dangerous areas early on in the encounter, cheered on by the lively home supporters.
United’s quality quickly shone through however and Hinata Miyazawa had a shot that was easily saved by Bec Thomas after just four minutes.
Just two minutes later, Marc Skinner’s side broke away and Leah Galton’s cut back was met by Ella Toone, but she steered her effort just wide of the post.
On eight minutes the wave continued as Thomas made a wonderful stop to deny Grace Clinton from close range. Toone delivered a great ball into the box and the England international volleyed the ball on target but she was denied by the home side’s inspired keeper.
After 19 minutes Wolves got a corner in a rare moment of attacking play but in truth, they rarely threatened the visitors.
The one-way traffic continued and after 25 minutes, when good build-up play resulted in Melvine Malard being put in on goal but she took too many touches and she was denied by Thomas.
Moments later, United got the reward their efforts deserved as Elisabeth Terland slotted in the opener after great work by Malard down the right hand side of the pitch.
United’s French star was now causing havoc in the Wolves’ backline and really should have scored when she was only four yards out from goal after a corner, but she skewed her effort over the bar when it looked easier to score than miss.
After 37 minutes United got a deserved second and some breathing space after Leah Galton marked her 150th appearance for the club with a well-taken goal. She collected the ball on the left wing, cut inside and fired in a beautifully disguised effort that left the Wolves’ keeper no chance.
Two minutes into added time, Malard was once again provided with a wonderful chance to score after a free kick reached her in the box but once again she managed to lift the ball over the bar.
The half-time whistle blew and United were well in control of the tie.
The onslaught continued after the break as Millie Turner delivered a chipped ball to the back post and Elisabeth Terland headed the ball across the goal for Aoife Mannion to apply the finish from close range. It was her first goal for the club and she celebrated in delight.
With their tails firmly up and the home side crestfallen, Skinner’s side ruthlessly added their fourth of the evening in the 55th minute.
United’s in-form star Ella Toone picked the ball up in a dangerous area and she struck the ball from 20 yards out, finding the bottom corner beautifully, to assert the away side’s superiority.
On 63 minutes, United pressed for their fifth with a long distance effort from Clinton but the ball was well caught by Thomas.
Not content with four, the visitors pushed on for another goal and they almost got it when good work down the right hand side resulted in Clinton hitting the crossbar from an effort inside the penalty area.
Substitute Rachel Williams almost got in on the act after 75 minutes when she raced onto a wonderful ball by Malard but she poked her effort just wide of the far post.
The away side thought they had secured their fifth goal of the game when Millie Turner thundered in a header but she was judged to have been in an offside position.
Finally the away side got their sought-after fifth when 17 year old debutant Mared Griffiths slotted in from close range after a mistake by the Wolves keeper gave her the easiest of chances to open her account in the 88th minute.
United had the ball in the back of the net once more after a header from Williams but the goal was disallowed in additional time.
There was just time for the FA Cup holders to add a sixth when Griffiths added her second when her volley somehow found its way past Thomas in the home side’s net in the fifth minute of added time.
