Massive clue about Enzo Maresca’s future in quotes about £40m transfer | OneFootball

We’re still waiting for this week’s Chelsea Confidential at the Daily Mail, but we thought we’d look back at last week’s edition in the meantime.

It covered the arrival of Geovany Quenda, signed from Sporting CP to arrive at the end of next season, and how a phone call from Enzo Maresca sealed the deal.

“Sources in the camp of Geovany Quenda say Maresca spoke personally with the 17-year-old winger of Sporting CP before that £40million deal was revealed last week,” Kieran Gill wrote.

“Maresca gave Quenda a message of confidence over the course of their conversation, telling him to keep evolving, learning and improving. He added that he is trusted as someone perfect for the Chelsea project and that he is looking forward to working with him in the future.”

Quenda has since put in a couple of really impressive showings for Sporting, so clearly the message did get through. If he keeps this up for a year, the hype will be incredible.

Another clue that Maresca is in for long haul

Now we’ve already covered the Quenda side of things. But how about the Maresca side of things? The fact that he’s being trusted to speak to players and make decisions which have effects not just for next season, but for the season after next and beyond, is very positive from his point of view.

We never thought he was in any danger – but then again we didn’t think Mauricio Pochettino was in any danger a year ago. Anything can happen, but after a few years of turmoil, we reckon those in charge have found someone they’re really happy with in the form of the Italian coach, and we think even a disappointing collapse to leave us out of the Champions League places wouldn’t put his job under threat.
