At the Premio Gentleman Fair Play awards last night, Daniele Massaro spoke of the work that AC Milan need to do before they reach the levels which they have done in the past.

There can be no denials about the season that is, thankfully for many, close to its conclusion. It has shown glimpses of inspiration, with consistency sprinkled throughout. However, the underlying elements of the season have been negative.

Two Derby della Madonnina defeats, both humiliating for different reasons. Two exits from Europe, where Milan could and should have done more. Two – the number next to the Rossoneri’s name in the Serie A table.

As a result of the issues, Stefano Pioli will depart, and the Diavolo will enter a new era after five years of the current manager. They will not start from scratch, though, given the 58-year-old has laid fantastic foundations for his successor to build from.

Massaro spoke to journalists at the awards on Thursday night, and his words have been relayed by Milan News.

How can Milan replicate their successes of the past?

“Whoever wears that jersey must understand the sense of belonging, the respect, it is a team that must return to high levels, in Italy, in Europe and in the world. Those who wear this jersey must understand, Milan is excellence. 30 years ago our triumph in Athens? It’s the past, history.

“Victories that will remain with everyone, not just the Rossoneri but anyone who loves football. The match of the century, we did something extraordinary. Everyone must work to make Milan what it was, the most titled club in the world.”
