After recording their worst-ever Premier League finish, Manchester United will be desperate to end the campaign on a high when they face Manchester City in the FA Cup final on Saturday.

And manager Erik ten Hag has received another timely injury boost with midfielder Mason Mount spotted back in training. The former Chelsea star last played three weeks ago in the game against Crystal Palace.

It has been a disappointing campaign for the England international since his much-hyped summer move with injuries restricting him to only eight starts in all competitions.

When fit, the 25-year-old has not looked like the most natural fit for the manager’s high-transition style, often seen occupying the same areas as Bruno Fernandes, which has left too much space for Casemiro to cover.

Mount returns

The United No 7’s latest absence, the third separate issue has has suffered this term, was due to a “minor issue” as per his manager and he only ended up missing three games.

The Dutch manager is expected to shed further light on what sort of condition the midfielder is in on Thursday during the pre-match press conference.

With City expected to dominate the ball, United are expected to play a conservative style from the start and Mount might only get called if the game is still there to be won.

Injuries have severely affected the Red Devils’ current campaign and only recently has the situation begun to clear up with multiple players returning to training.

Victor Lindelof and Anthony Martial were also recently spotted back in training and the duo could play some part at Wembley.

Injury situation clearing up too late

The Swede has missed 21 games while the Frenchman has missed 28 games. Both have been linked with exits with the No 9 spotting saying his farewell to the Old Trafford faithful after the final home game of the season.

The Old Trafford side will still be without the services of Harry Maguire, Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia for the repeat of last season’s final.

The odds are heavily stacked against the 20-time English league champions especially considering the contrasting form both sides are enjoying.

The manager’s future remains on a sticky wicket and he will be hoping the stronger squad he will have at his disposal can pull off the unthinkable.
