Ligue 1 outfit Marseille have joined the race to sign Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood.

The 22-year-old is up for sale after spending a season on loan at Getafe, who cannot meet Manchester United’s demands for a permanent transfer.

Getafe would offer to take Greenwood back on loan, but United’s preference for now is a permanent deal.

Greenwood has consequently been linked with moves to Italy, though a return to Spain shouldn’t be ruled out.

Juventus, Lazio and Napoli have all been linked with moves for Greenwood.

According to The Athletic, Marseille are exploring a deal to sign Greenwood after talks between the two clubs.

Greenwood has emerged on Marseille’s target list and it is understood that the player is in favour of a move over other options at this stage. It was previously thought that Spain was his preferred destination.

The forward could soon work under former Brighton manager Roberto De Zerbi, who is set to become Marseille’s manager.

It is important that United sell Greenwood this summer because it will allow the club to add more funds to the transfer kitty. Erik ten Hag plans to strengthen his squad ahead of next season and United are expected to be busy this summer with outgoings as well as incomings.
