Spanish international Martín Zubimendi has this week provided an insight into his decision to rebuff the advances of Real Madrid, in favour of signing with Arsenal.
Midfielder Zubimendi has of course taken his place centre stage in the headlines across Spain and England alike over the last 24 hours.
As much comes after the 26-year-old’s long-anticipated move to the Premier League with Arsenal was finally made official.
The announcement brought to an end a saga which lasted several months, and also featured one other leading protagonist – Real Madrid.
Los Blancos are understood to have expressed a keen interest in bringing Zubimendi to the Santiago Bernabéu this summer.
In the end, though, the Real Sociedad standout opted for a move to north London, a decision which he has now explained, in quotes relaid by Mundo Deportivo:
“It wasn’t an easy move. Everyone knows what Real Sociedad have given me. When I made the move, I looked at Arsenal because I fit in well with their style. They’re a young team, with passion and ambition. I talked about it with my family; they’re the ones who are there right now. My parents have helped me a lot. I’ve talked a lot with them, but it’s a personal decision.”
