Inter president Giuseppe Marotta has become the latest figure to deny they had any role in stopping AC Milan from hiring Fabio Paratici.
Just when Milan looked likely to hire Paratici, things suddenly slowed down. There was talk of his limited operability changing the minds of the management, as well as pressure from Italian football’s governing body, the FIGC.
Paratici is someone who worked for years alongside Marotta during the era at Juventus in which they won nine league titles in a row. After moving out from under his shadow, the work that Paratici did perhaps wasn’t as stellar and thus Juve’s dominance in Serie A slipped away.
Marotta spoke after Milan president Paolo Scaroni at an even organised by the newspaper Il Foglio at San Siro. He responded to the idea that he had a possible influence in the negotiations between Milan and Paratici.
“This is another Milanese urban legend. I don’t know if there is a white knight, a metaphor that is used a lot in finance. How can you imagine that I could have influenced the owner, the president or the CEO of Milan?” he said.
“They are all people who are competent and don’t wait for my suggestions. Even if I wanted to, what would I have done? Personally, if Paratici came to be the sporting director of Milan I would be even happier, because it would generate further stimuli for me and therefore I would be even more pissed off.”
