Marcus Rashford has endured a turbulent few years, slipping away from prominence at Manchester United before sealing a season-long loan to Barcelona. The move to Spain has offered him the chance to reset, away from the spotlight of English football, and rediscover the qualities that once made him a poster boy for United and England.
Speaking to Diario Sport, Rashford was asked to identify the most difficult defender he has faced. Without hesitation, he responded: “So far, I think [Virgil] Van Dijk.” For a player who has encountered some of the finest centre-backs in world football, the choice underlines just how significant Van Dijk has been during Liverpool’s modern era.
When Liverpool agreed to pay Southampton £70 million for Virgil van Dijk in 2018, eyebrows were raised at the size of the fee. Yet, over time, it has proven one of the most transformative signings in Premier League history. The Dutchman’s leadership, reading of the game and sheer presence have helped elevate Liverpool to domestic and European success.

Stephen Warnock once described Van Dijk as an “immaculate” player, a fitting label for someone who has consistently combined elegance with defensive dominance. Now captain of Liverpool, Van Dijk remains central to Arne Slot’s plans after leading the side to the Premier League title in 2024. His influence on and off the pitch is difficult to quantify, but his place in Anfield’s history books is already assured.
For Rashford, the acknowledgement is telling. As a forward who thrives on pace and direct running, the fact that Van Dijk is considered his toughest challenge speaks volumes. Few defenders are able to match Rashford stride for stride, fewer still can read his intentions as effectively as the Liverpool captain.
Van Dijk has faced constant speculation over his future, particularly with his contract running until 2027. Yet, unlike others who have been tempted by moves away, he has embraced the project under Slot, recognising that his role remains vital in maintaining Liverpool’s defensive strength.
What comes next for Van Dijk is less clear. Age will inevitably catch up, and Liverpool may need to plan succession in the coming years. However, as long as he continues to marshal the back line with authority and retains the physical sharpness that has defined his career, there is little reason why he cannot finish his playing days at Anfield.
For Rashford, the choice of toughest opponent is more than just a compliment, it is a reflection of Van Dijk’s enduring quality. For Liverpool, it is another reminder of the monumental impact their captain has had since the day he walked through the door.
