Marc Guehi scores for United but late disaster throws two points away – Crystal Palace 1 Newcastle 1

The stat of zero shots on target by the break summed up the opening half, in terms of how little the goalkeepers were involved.

United dominating possession as Palace tried to catch them out on the break.

Only seven touches for Palace in the NUFC penalty area in the opening 45, five for Newcastle at the other end.

Palace did have the best chance of that opening period, a good move seeing the ball squared from Palace’s right but Munoz putting it the wrong side of the back post.

Nick Pope made an outstanding save with his leg when one on one, the offside flag then went up but I think every chance VAR would have given it as a goal if Pope hadn’t saved it.

The big/worst news of the first half was Alexander Isak forced off through injury. One Palace player pushed Isak into another home player and though he tried to carry on, the (what looked a hip) injury led to him heading off. Gordon through the middle and Barnes coming on.

Second half a similar pattern of Newcastle with more possession but Palace trying to break.

Then the move of the match.

A clever free-kick routine fooled Palace. Instead of putting the ball into the middle from the right side of the box, Gordon played it to Tonali then Hall (I think) to Gordon in behind, who then squared it for Marc Guehi to score his first goal for Newcastle! A couple of yards out he couldn’t get out of the way of the low cross.

This at least made Palace open up and try to attack to get the equaliser, a much better game as the result.

Chances coming at both ends but Nick Pope some class saves as Palace became desperate.

One save falling for Munoz and Burn making a a sensational block on the follow up.

Then Schar’s turn to make a class tackle inside the box to deny the home side.

Tonali was outstanding throughout, passing and moving. Who says he can’t play with Bruno Guimaraes, who also had a decent game.

As the game moved into the final stages United starting to dominate play and territory, playing inside the Palace third of the pitch.

Palace looking like they had totally run out of ideas as the five minutes of added time ticked down, then disaster.

An average cross from Marc Guehi wide left to the back post saw Joelinton inexplicably fail to keep an eye on his man Munoz, didn’t even jump. A free header around six yards out and though Nick Pope got a hand/arm to it, he couldn’t keep out the close range effort.

Over the course of the whole match, you can’t say a draw wasn’t fair.

However, Newcastle United had managed the game so well the final 20/25 minutes, absolutely gutting to see two points needlessly thrown away at the very end.

Newcastle scoring without having a single shot on target takes some doing! Palace themselves only having three other efforts on target apart from the equaliser.

I think our players need to have a lot more goals from outside the box, maybe too many touches at times, rather than taking a few strides and hitting it.
