Manuel Ugarte is Manchester United’s primary target for the midfield position, and a deal is currently looking likely before the end of the transfer deadline. Despite it becoming public in the media that the club had ended their interest in the former Sporting midfielder, United have always remained intent on signing him this summer, with personal terms being agreed for some time now dating as far back as June.

The player is firmly open to a move to Manchester United, and sources close to the player have maintained that he is determined to make his mark at the club if a deal goes through. The Uruguayan is frustrated with the situation at PSG this summer and feels it has gone on for far too long. United are currently discussing a loan with an obligation to buy after it became evident Scott McTominay was not joining Fulham last night.

The Red’s were expecting to use the funds from the McTominay sale to fund a permanent move for Ugarte, but unless the Scottish midfielder agrees to join Napoli in the coming days, any deal for Ugarte is anticipated to be a loan with an obligation.

United had interest in Sander Berge as a potential alternative to the PSG midfielder, but they never entered into advanced conversations. Fulham are now wrapping up a deal for the Norwegian, with a medical being done today to finalise the move. Youssouf Fofana was a player of interest, but again, United never made a proposal to Monaco or the player, and merely entered into discussions with his representatives at various junctures during the window.

Elsewhere, Exequiel Palacios is someone admired at the club, and they remain attentive to his situation at Bayer Leverkusen. There are no talks at the moment, but failure to land a deal for Ugarte may see the situation change. Leverkusen is intent on keeping hold of the Argentine, as they want him to play Champions League football next season. Ederson from Atalanta is someone the club has followed for some time, but the fee Atalanta is asking for, over £50 million, is not something the club can afford this summer. Another move for Sofyan Amrabat has yet to be ruled out, but the Moroccan is currently part of Fiorentina’s plans for the season unless a suitable offer comes in before the deadline.

Ugarte remains the prime target, and a deal is something that can be imagined by all parties at this moment in time.
