Roberto Mancini was reportedly the runner-up for the Juventus job after Thiago Motta got the boot, although he likely wouldn’t have accepted the same contract Igor Tudor took.
The coach spoke to the press during an event at the LUISS university and was asked about the Bianconeri’s coaching change (via Diretta).
“I don’t know what happened there. Managers are influential in their teams, then the results come and go. If things do go well, it’s fair for the boss to take the blame. However, you need time to have an impact. Instead, they come under scrutiny very quickly in Italy.” “A gaffer must have vision, be empathetic with the club, and be able to convey his thoughts. But he also needs support and opportunities. Directors should have a strategy too when they buy players. You can’t win all the time, but it’s important to bounce back immediately when you don’t.”
Mancini appeared ready to return when quizzed about his future.
“We’ll see what will happen. Everything can change overnight in football. You must know how to choose. I’ve worked in England for four years. Winning after a nice journey is the best possible thing. Manchester City asked me to lift the Premier League in five seasons. We did it after three, and then things got even better. The Italian managers are still on the cutting edge, but you also must have strong players.”
Mancini commented on Serie A and the Azzurri.
“We had incredible footballers for two decades, now they are a lot fewer. In my time, the foreigners were all champions and helped the youngsters. If you sign low-level ones, you might as well give a chance to the Italian talents.”
