Several recent injury boosts mean United boss Ruben Amorim faces some tricky starting line-up decisions

Ruben Amorim has some big calls to make as Manchester United prepare to face Tottenham in the Europa League final.

The United boss has seen his squad further boosted by the return of a previously injured trio on the eve of the final after already welcoming Amad Diallo back to the squad amid earlier fears he would be out for the season.

Joshua Zirkzee, who had also been ruled out through the end of the campaign after injuring his hamstring, was a surprise appearance in team training at Carrington on Tuesday. Given the extended absence, the Dutch forward might be more likely to start on the bench in Spain, with Rasmus Højlund in line to start.

Centre-back Leny Yoro is in the same boat, having been named in United’s 26-man travelling squad despite missing Friday’s defeat to Chelsea with the foot injury he sustained earlier this month.

The 19-year-old Frenchman started both legs of United’s semi-final, and Amorim will hope he is fit to do so again on Wednesday given the continued absences of Matthijs de Ligt and Lisandro Martinez. He is challenging Luke Shaw for the third spot in the back-three next to Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelöf.

Diogo Dalot, previously a regular under Amorim, has been sidelined with an ankle injury for several weeks. The Portuguese full-back trained this week, but Wednesday may come too soon for his return to the starting line-up after six games out.

Instead, Amorim’s dilemma will likely be whether to field Noussair Mazraoui or Diallo at right wing-back. The latter has also featured further forward, as he did against Chelsea, but has impressed in this position on several occasions and is perhaps the more exciting choice given what he brings to the side from an attacking standpoint.

Mazraoui, meanwhile, is also an option on either flank, although natural left-footer Patrick Dorgu was preferred on the left in both semi-final legs.

In the middle of the park, the pairing of Manuel Ugarte and Casemiro is expected to be given the nod for the final as it has been in previous knock-out rounds. The Brazilian started against Chelsea but was handed an early rest.

Ahead of them, captain Bruno Fernandes will undoubtedly take one of two attacking midfield slots in Amorim’s usual 3-4-2-1 set-up. That leaves one position up for grabs, and - if Amad is already included elsewhere in the line-up - two leading candidates: Mason Mount and Alejandro Garnacho.

The Argentine has started the majority of United’s matches this season, including every knock-out match en route to Bilbao, but has notably been benched in each of their last two (admittedly meaningless) league fixtures, while Mount has started each of their last three and proved instrumental in sealing their spot in the final.

The ex-Chelsea playmaker replaced Garnacho in the semi-final second leg, so Amorim will have to decide which of the two considerably different attackers he prefers from the start against Spurs and which he’d like to turn to as a potential game-changer late on.
