Manchester United take on Everton in the Premier League Summer Series in the United States on Sunday, which will take place at 22:00 GMT. The game will be broadcast live on Sky Sports Main Event and Sky Sports Premier League.
The Danish striker is coming into this game with a good feeling after netting in United’s last friendly win – a resounding 4-1 victory over Bournemouth. Hojlund scored the opening goal of the game against the Cherries and he will be hoping to keep his form going after a miserable 2024-25 campaign that saw him score just four Premier League goals.
Hojlund knows he’s going to be under pressure to perform this season, especially with United closing in on the signing of new forward Benjamin Sesko from RB Leipzig, while more attacking competition has also arrived in Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha. Against Everton, he’s rated at 7/5 to score anytime and he’s backed at 15/2 to build on his performance last time out and grab a brace.
United have shown glimpses of how they can operate as a team after that win over Bournemouth, which prompted manager Ruben Amorim to say they “look like a different team” compared to their horror 2024-25 campaign. If the Red Devils continue in that vein against the Toffees, you would certainly expect them to rack up a big win, especially since Everton have hardly strengthened in this window.
United are rated at 4/7 favourites to win the game outright and they’ve been backed at 7/1 to repeat their feat from the last game and win by three goals. For a two-goal winning margin, they’ve been rated at 4/1 with new signings Mbeumo and Cunha also keen to impress and get on the scoresheet.
That win over Bournemouth wasn’t United’s only success in pre-season under Amorim. They’re unbeaten this summer as things stand after a 0-0 draw against Leeds to start things off, before getting a 2-1 win over West Ham in their other Summer Series clash. That game saw captain Bruno Fernandes score a brace before Jarrod Bowen pulled one back.
United are hurting after their dismal season saw them finish 15th in the Premier League, with 17 losses and they’ll be eager to keep making improvements in pre-season, with this clash giving them the perfect preparation against a fellow top flight side.
Everton’s pre-season, on the other hand, hasn’t been the most pleasing for manager David Moyes, who is yet to win a game this summer. Of course, the only thing that matters is results in competitive games, but he will surely be concerned after a 1-1 draw against Accrington, followed by a 1-0 loss to Blackburn. The Toffees were then hammered 3-0 by Bournemouth before a 2-1 loss to West Ham last time out.
Everton only have one more friendly after this – a home clash against Roma – at their new stadium before their Premier League opener against Leeds, so Moyes will hope momentum picks up quickly.
Amorim doesn’t have too many concerns going into this game after getting through the Bournemouth game without any fresh injury worries.
Andre Onana, Noussair Mazraoui and Joshua Zirkzee have missed the first two games of the US tour due to injury and were again absent from training this week. This game looks to have come to soon for them but they shouldn’t be too far off returning to action.
United will hope to have new signing Mbeumo available for the game after he missed the clashes against the Cherries and West Ham, with Amorim hoping to throw him in for his debut.
Everton have been boosted by the return of centre-back James Tarkowski, who made his comeback in the loss to West Ham following more than three months on the sidelines – and his presence will be huge for Moyes in the upcoming season.
The only other main concern is fellow defender Jarrad Branthwaite, who has not travelled with Everton for their trip to the United States as he continues to nurse a “minor niggle” he picked up against Blackburn.
The last game between the pair was a 2-2 draw at Goodison Park, the final match between the two teams at the old stadium. In the reverse game at Old Trafford, Ruben Amorim’s side romped to a 4-0 thrashing.
