Manchester United’s Danish talent scout Tommy Møller Nielsen has died.

Although we will focus on Nielsen’s time at Old Trafford, we can’t forget he was the son of Denmark’s most successful manager of all-time — Richard Møller Nielsen, who won the Danish league title twice and led the national side to a shock Euros triumph in 1992.

The 61-year-old had been working at Manchester United for seven years. Reports suggest he was most recently consulted about the signing of Christian Eriksen last summer, ahead of his Bosman switch from Brentford.

As well as United, Nielsen held roles with Scottish clubs Rangers and Aberdeen.

The sad news was confirmed by Nielsen’s wife this afternoon, as per Danish outlet Fyens Stiftstidende.

A statement from Nielsen’s former club Odense Boldklub on Monday afternoon read: “It is with deep sadness that we have received the message that the former first team player and OB ambassador Tommy Møller Nielsen has passed away. All our thoughts go out to Tommy’s family and friends at this difficult time.”

At United, Nielsen played a key role in the club’s scouting operation in Scandinavia.
