Manchester United made a brilliant start to the summer transfer window by completing a £62.5 million deal for Matheus Cunha.
But the transfer activity at Old Trafford has gone quiet since then, with the Red Devils yet to get a deal over the line for Bryan Mbeumo.
After their initial bid of £55m was turned down, United submitted an improved offer of £62.5m for the Cameroonian. But their proposal was rejected once again by Brentford.
The Bees have now upped their valuation of Mbeumo to £70m. This is a substantial fee for a player who has only one year left on his contract.
United need to end their pursuit of the 25-year-old and focus on alternative targets.
Mbeumo has been a consistent performer in the Premier League. He is a versatile attacker renowned for his pace, dribbling skills, and work rate.
The Cameroon international has also made it clear he only wants to join United, despite interest from Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur.
But United should not waste their time, effort and resources if a pursuit is likely to fail due to Brentford’s stubbornness.
They desperately need to bring in another centre-forward to replace Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee.
A new central midfielder is also needed following the departure of Christian Eriksen.
The Red Devils cannot afford to be messed around by Brentford and should move on to other transfer targets.
