Ruben Amorim handed injury scare ahead of Europa League semi-final second leg

All eyes are on Europe for Manchester United after another frustrating weekend in the Premier League.

Ruben Amorim’s side were beaten 4-3 by Brentford on Sunday and they sit 15th in the table, but the focus was clear when the United boss made eight changes ahead of Thursday night’s second leg against Athletic Bilbao.

There was still an injury problem for Amorim, when Matthijs de Ligt was forced off, and that is a fresh concern for him as he looks to ensure United do not surrender the three-goal aggregate lead they hold in the semi-final tie.

Amad Diallo is now back to fitness, but the likes of Diogo Dalot, Ayden Heaven and Joshua Zirkzee remain out.

Matthijs de Ligt

Matthijs de Ligt is facing another blow on the injury front.

The centre-back made his return off the bench in the first leg against Athletic Bilbao and then started against Brentford on Sunday, but was forced off in the first-half with a fresh injury.

Speaking after the match, Amorim said: "I don't know. We will see. I hope it's nothing serious.”

Potential return date: Unknown

Diogo Dalot

It remains to be seen whether Diogo Dalot plays again this season.

The full-back has missed United’s last three matches with a calf injury and he is in a race against time to feature before the end of the campaign.

"We don't know how long he's going to be out,” Amorim said last month. “But he's out for these next games. We will see to the end.

"There is that possibility [he could miss the rest of the season] but I don't know, we will check week by week."

Potential return date: Late May

Ayden Heaven

There has been no new update provided on Ayden Heaven’s fitness.

The defender is believed to have suffered a setback after returning to the squad against Newcastle last month, and he once again missed out for the trip to Brentford.

Amorim has said only that Heaven is “not ready”, with the severity of the injury still uncerain.

Predicted return: Unknown

Joshua Zirkzee

There is more clarity over Joshua Zirkzee, who will not play again this season due to a hamstring injury.

The forward came off against Newcastle last month after a burst forward and his focus is not on returning to fitness in time for pre-season.

Amorim said: “He’s not going to play more this season. Let’s prepare him for the next one. I think he’s improving in all aspects of the game, so it’s hard for any player to stop, but this is football and he has to be ready now to recover."

Predicted return: Summer 2025

Toby Collyer

Toby Collyer is believed to be closing in on a return to action.

The midfielder has been out since Amorim said he picked up a “small issue” a month ago, but Collyer returned to individual training on the Carrington pitches ahead of the first leg against Athletic Bilbao.

He did not make the squad for that match or the clash with Brentford, but he could be available soon.

Potential return date: Sunday May 11 vs West Ham (H)

Lisandro Martinez

Lisandro Martinez suffered an ACL injury in February and underwent successful surgery.

He is now on the long road back to fitness, with the defender facing a battle just to be back in time for the start of next season.

Potential return: Unknown
