Erik ten Hag’s position at Manchester United is in serious doubt on the back of a frustrating start to the new campaign.

It is no secret that INEOS explored the market for a new manager before handing Ten Hag a new contract at Old Trafford. However, despite doubts over his ability to lead their project, United backed him in the transfer market by spending more than £150m on five new signings.

Regardless, the Red Devils continue to struggle under Ten Hag, having managed just three wins out of their opening eight games across all competitions.

The inconsistent display and a failure to win all three points against Twente in the Europa League seems to have further intensified pressure on Ten Hag.

According to TEAMtalk, the 54-year-old is on “borrowed time” at United, who are understood to be “actively looking” at managers who could take over the helm following his exit.

It is claimed Ten Hag’s sack is a “matter of time” as decision makers at the club do not believe he is the man to take the club back to the top of the Premier League and he is “merely in place whilst the club structure is built back to an elite standard.”

United reportedly tried to find an “elite coach” in the summer, having held talks with both Thomas Tuchel and Mauricio Pochettino.

Their aim remains unchanged and it is “unlikely” that the ex-Ajax tactician will be the side’s manager by the end of the season.

Earlier this month, United chief executive Omar Berrada and sporting director Dan Ashworth distanced themselves from the club’s decision to hand the Dutchman a new deal.

Further, TEAMtalk claim that “the players would also welcome a fresh approach and the appointment of a new, world-class manager.”

United are thought to be following Tuchel as well as Gareth Southgate, who recently left his England job.

In recent days, Newcastle United’s Eddie Howe and Inter Milan boss Simone Inzaghi have also been linked with the job at United.
