Manchester United cancel end-of-season awards amidst club’s disappointing season | OneFootball

Manchester United have reportedly cancelled their end-of-season awards amidst the club’s extremely disappointing form this season.

United suffered their 14th top-flight defeat of the campaign at the hands of Arsenal on Sunday evening.

A Leandro Trossard goal within the opening 45 minutes was enough to add to Erik ten Hag’s misery and further convince the United bosses to part ways with the Dutchman.

According to The Athletic’s Adam Crafton, United have made the decision to do away with the end-of-season awards considering the extremely poor season they’ve endured.

Crafton reveals, “Manchester United have cancelled the club’s traditional end of season awards dinner as the club’s on-field form nosedived towards the end of the campaign, with the club saying they do not want to provide any distractions ahead of the upcoming FA Cup final against Manchester City.”

“The club ordinarily host a dinner at their Old Trafford stadium at the end of the season in order to present awards including the Sir Matt Busby player of the year award, as well as recognition for breakthrough young talent. It is attended by the first team for the men’s and women’s teams, as well as academy players, coaching staff, club staff, supporters and sponsors..”

“The club say that United’s dinner for this year had originally been scheduled for May 20, in the week leading up to the final against City on May 25, but following consultation with Ten Hag and the football leadership team, it has been decided that the players should not have any distractions in the week of the game. The players will still receive awards voted by their peers, coaches and fans but there will not be an awards dinner.”

Crafton explains that there is still hope that the Red Devils can somewhat salvage their season by attaining an unexpected victory against Manchester City in the FA Cup final at Wembley.

Should Ten Hag’s men succeed and lift the domestic competition on May 25, they would also gain entry into the Europa League.

The last time the United players elected to cancel their end-of-season awarding ceremony was during the 2021/2022 campaign under interim boss Ralf Rangnick.

On that occasion, the 20-time English champions endured a very difficult period even after the sacking of Norwegian coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

United Women’s Academy already held a function to celebrate to award their Player of the Year winners. These prizes were presented to the U-21 and U-16 sides.
