In a recent episode of the United Stand, journalist Ben Jacobs mentioned that Manchester United are in the running to sign Eintracht Frankfurt forward Hugo Ekitike this summer. Jacobs said,
“They’re running data on some other names as well, including Hugo Ekitike, which is a new name that I can bring to the mix too.
“Liverpool are very interested, Chelsea have held some talks as well, but nothing’s going to happen in the next days with Hugo Ekitike either and Frankfurt want €100million, so he’s actually more expensive than Viktor Gyokeres.
“So right now, I’m told, if Manchester United can do Gyokeres, they would like to advance on it, but it will all depend on the overall cost and other suitors, and that’s why some of these other names are also concurrently being discussed.”
Ekitike enjoyed an outstanding campaign at the German club after he produced a lot of impressive displays as the spearhead of their attack. The Reims-born talent banged in 22 goals and grabbed 12 assists in 48 matches for Eintracht Frankfurt last season on all fronts.
The 22-year-old was a reliable performer in the final third as he averaged 4.0 shots per 90 minutes in the Bundesliga. He also kept 38.6% of his attempts on target. Ekitike even linked up play well with others around him in the opposition half based on his pass completion rate of 75.5% in league football (stats via fbref.com).

Ekitike can find some space for himself to get some strikes in on target and has proven himself to be a good finisher in front of the opponent’s goal. He has also got the vision to create a few inviting chances for his teammates to score.
The French forward is also quite clever with his movements in and around the opposition penalty area. Standing at 1.90m, Ekitike can use his strong frame to win a few aerial duels for his team. However, he needs to work on improving his link-up play up top.
Ekitike would no doubt enhance the quality of Man United boss Ruben Amorim’s frontline. He would be an upgrade over Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee at the Mancunian club.
At 22, Ekitike has the potential to be a top performer in the Premier League. Therefore, the Red Devils would be wise to go for a player of his quality this off-season. However, only time will tell whether he can make a smooth transition to life in Manchester.
