The young Magpies conceded three times inside the opening half-hour at the Joie Stadium, falling behind in the opening stages through Cathal Heffernan's unfortunate own goal before strikes from Justin Oboavwoduo and Divin Mubama extended City's lead before the break.

Mubama rounded off the scoring shortly after the restart as United's youngsters confirmed ninth spot in the 26-team division, booking an away tie against Arsenal in the last-16 stage of the Premier League 2 playoffs.

Diarmuid O'Carroll made three changes from the side which claimed a 7-1 win against Reading at St. James' Park last week as goalkeeper Adam Harrison, who was named on the bench for Newcastle's UEFA Champions League visit of AC Milan last season, was handed his first Premier League 2 start.

Sean Neave, named on the bench for last week's 3-0 win at Leicester City, and Johnny Emerson - who produced a goal and assist as a substitute against Reading's second-string, replaced Josh Donaldson and Jay Turner-Cooke respectively in the starting line-up.

Newcastle found themselves behind in the sixth minute through Heffernan's own goal as the Irish centre-back inadvertently sliced Ashton Muir's dangerous cross into his own net via the far right-hand post.

United's youngsters went close to equalising in swift fashion through Neave as the 17-year-old forward, named on the bench for Newcastle's Carabao Cup final victory against Liverpool, raced clear on goal but despite lifting the ball over City goalkeeper Spike Brits, Jahmai Simpson-Pusey managed to prevent the ball trickling into the net after clearing off the line.

Harrison produced a strong stop to deny Oboavwodou minutes later as the 18-year-old goalkeeper parried the City forward's goalbound header from Ryan McAidoo's cross out for a corner before later pushing the attacking midfielder's curling effort from the edge of the box out for a corner.

In the 15th minute, though, Newcastle were dealt a further setback as Oboavwoduo doubled City's lead, producing a neat turn to evade the challenge of Magpies defender Ciaran Thompson before arrowing a powerful effort into the net beyond Harrison.

United's youngsters conceded a third goal in the 29th minute through Mubama as the City striker, a Premier League debutant with West Ham United, raced down on goal following Jaden Heskey's through ball before calmly lifting the ball over Harrison.

Harrison prevented Jaden Heskey, son of former Liverpool and Aston Villa striker Emile, from grabbing a fourth goal before half-time as the midfielder's shot inside the box was parried by the teenage 'keeper's right arm.

Newcastle made a bright start to the second half as Garang Kuol went close to netting a fourth goal in his last three Premier League 2 matches, with the Australia international volleying wide from Johnny Emerson's cross from the right flank.

However, in the 56th minute, United's second-string were dealt a tough blow as Mubama grabbed his brace after collecting Heskey's teasing pass inside the box before lifting the ball over Harrison.

After Ryan McAidoo struck the crossbar for the hosts with a dangerous curling effort from the edge of the box, Newcastle ought to have pulled a goal back after seeing a trio of shots blocked in quick succession, with Anthony Munda's low drive saved by Brits before drilled efforts from Kuol and Neave were both blocked on the goal line.

Munda, who signed his first professional contract, was unable to net a late consolation as the Cowgate-born midfielder latched onto a loose ball inside the box before his low effort was blocked by Brits.
