Manchester City and Bournemouth are showing interest in Chelsea defender Josh Acheampong, according to reports from The Guardian.

However, Chelsea are expected to turn down any move for the teenager as they view him as a player for the future.

Acheampong, 19, has developed through the youth set-up at Stamford Bridge and has already made steps into the first-team picture.

He was given limited minutes under Enzo Maresca last season but still impressed when handed opportunities.

Maresca has spoken highly of Acheampong on several occasions and is said to be keen to keep him in his squad.

The Italian coach believes the defender can play an important role, especially with injuries affecting the team.

Bournemouth made an approach over a potential loan deal, but Chelsea quickly rejected it. The club feel that Acheampong would benefit from staying close to the first team rather than heading out temporarily.

Clubs tracking his progress

City are monitoring Acheampong as they look to add depth at the back and also invest in long-term prospects.

Pep Guardiola’s side want to strengthen their defence further and see the teenager as a player who could develop in the years ahead.

Chelsea, however, have not received any official bids for Acheampong so far.

The London side remains determined to keep him and will not be drawn into talks unless the situation changes.

Acheampong caught attention during the summer when he featured in Chelsea’s Club World Cup campaign, which the club went on to win.

His versatility in defence makes him an attractive option, as he can cover several roles across the backline.

The teenager could see more chances in the coming season with Levi Colwill out through a serious knee injury.

Maresca believes Acheampong is ready to step in when required and continue his progress with the senior team.

City and Bournemouth are not the only clubs keeping an eye on the youngster.

Newcastle United, Crystal Palace, and West Ham are also following his development closely and may explore possible moves in the near future.
