A change of goalkeepers is now being prepared at Manchester City and two deals could be completed as soon as this week, according to new claims.

City’s goalkeeping department appears to be on the verge of significant transformation as club officials work on a dual deal that could see a senior name depart and a familiar face return within the space of just a few days.

With long-standing number one choice shot-stopper Ederson now seemingly edging closer to an Etihad Stadium exit and James Trafford firmly in the frame for a homecoming, City are preparing for a reshaped future between the sticks.

The potential return of Trafford marks a key pivot in the club’s long-term planning. Having sold the England international to Burnley in 2023, City inserted a buy-back clause into the deal and have been tracking his progress at Turf Moor closely since.

Trafford, for his part, has made no secret of his desire to reclaim the number one shirt at Manchester City one day – a belief reinforced by his repeated comments over the years about being ready to challenge at the highest level.

City’s need to act has become clearer in recent months. Ederson, now entering the final year of his contract, has been the subject of transfer enquiries from Saudi Arabia and Europe over the last 12 months.

Galatasaray have emerged as serious contenders in recent weeks, with talks advancing and optimism building on both sides of the negotiation. Manchester City, naturally, have begun lining up replacements – and in Trafford, they see both continuity and ambition.

According to the information of GalaHaberNet on X, Manchester City are now close to finalising a transfer for the Burnley goalkeeper and are waiting for Ederson’s sale to Galatasaray to be completed in order to make the transfer official.

It is claimed that Etihad Stadium officials expect the transfer to be finalised by Wednesday at the latest.

Trafford’s return could be viewed as the ideal scenario for City: a homegrown goalkeeper with a full season of top-level senior football under his belt, still just 22 years old, and fully attuned to the technical expectations required of a Pep Guardiola goalkeeper.

His familiarity with the club’s playing style – shaped across several years in the Academy, a taste of first-team football at Manchester City, and loan spells at Accrington and Bolton – makes his reintegration a smooth one.

From the perspective of City’s broader strategy, the move could also open doors for a reshuffle behind Trafford. Stefan Ortega Moreno, while valued by City, remains ambitious for regular first-team action, and interest from elsewhere has not faded. Whether he remains to provide competition or City opt to recruit again – potentially even turning to another youthful option – could depend on how quickly Trafford settles and how Ederson’s departure is structured.

Looking forward, should the deal for James Trafford be completed as expected, Manchester City fans could see him involved during pre-season, potentially even featuring in the club’s upcoming friendly in Palermo on August 9.
