Boss Chris Wilder has acknowledged Sheffield United's interest in prodigy Shea Charles. If a deal strikes, Charles will be their 2nd winter signing from Southampton.
In recent times, Southampton's relations with the two clubs from the Sheffield divide- Sheffield United and Sheffield Wednesday have been quite interesting.
Not much before, Southampton approached Sheffield Wednesday for their manager Danny Rohl. On the other hand, the Saints agreed to forward Brereton Diaz's loan deal with Sheffield United days ago.
Clearly, despite the bitterness of the rivalry between the two Sheffield sides, the Saints have managed close relations with them both.
But, sadly, it might be the end of connections with one of them.
Recently, Southampton decided to call back prodigy Shea Charles from his loan spell with Sheffield Wednesday. Taken as a step toward improving the squad, this Saints' decision can have decisive outcomes.
Though having made only 25 appearances for Danny Rohl's side, Charles had been key to the manager. To the extent that Sheffield Wednesday didn't want to let him leave, and had to start looking for a replacement.
If it wasn't enough to trigger Rohl's side, the sequence of events has taken another interesting twist.
Previously, a precious asset for Rohl's side, now Charles is well-longed by rivals Sheffield United.
As per the Daily Echo, Sheffield United boss Chris Wilder acknowledged the interest in Charles, saying: "We’re looking for players of quality and pedigree and he was on the list."
But, while the Sheffield clubs want to have Shea Charles, Southampton isn't out of the picture as well. Having called him back to help improve their situation, the Saints can decide not to approve his move further.
Thus, currently, Southampton and the two Sheffield sides are in a triangular standoff for prodigy Shea Charles. Though no solution looks imminent clearly, it will be interesting to see Charles' saga further.
