The Red Devils are currently 14th in the Premier League, but they sit 11 points outside the top half. Their chance to climb into the top half may even be over by the time they kick off at the Gtech Community Stadium on Sunday.

Of course, Man Utd’s biggest priority will be their Europa League semi-final second leg against Athletic Bilbao on Thursday, which will no doubt play a part in Ruben Amorim’s team selection.

Man Utd team news vs Brentford

Man Utd have a Europa League semi-final on Thursday. But they also take a 3-0 lead into their match at Old Trafford. So Amorim may be caught between two minds.

There are still absentees for Man Utd, with Altay Bayindir, Diogo Dalot, Joshua Zirzkee and Lisandro Martinez all out injured. Ayden Heaven and Toby Collyer may be in contention to return, but are unlikely to start if they are available.

Amorim only made two changes to his starting XIs from the draw with Bournemouth last weekend and first leg against Athletic Bilbao. Luke Shaw was replaced by Victor Lindelof in the defence, while Manuel Ugarte came in for Kobbie Mainoo in midfield.

While Mainoo is likely to return to the starting XI, he could replace Casemiro this time, with the Brazilian having played 155 minutes across the past two games. Shaw might keep his spot on the bench, with Matthijs de Ligt coming in for Lindelof instead.

Amad Diallo made his return to the bench in midweek but is very unlikely to start, with Man Utd not wanting to risk him so soon. Rasmus Hojlund has been starting up front a lot due to Zirkzee’s injury, but Chido Obi-Martin could feature if Amorim wants to give the Dane a rest — especially as Obi-Martin is ineligible for the Europa League.

Bruno Fernandes and Alejandro Garnacho should keep their places playing behind the striker.

Europa League win won’t save season

While Man Utd fans will no doubt be feeling good after their 0-3 away win over Athletic Bilbao in Thursday, Sunday brings a swift reminder of what’s happening domestically. The Red Devils look destined to finish in the bottom half of the Premier League for the first time, needing a lot to go their way to make it to the top 10.

And Harry Maguire has admitted that winning the Europa League won’t hide the disappointment of the season.

“It wouldn’t save the season because I think it’s been disappointing,” Maguire told reporters.

“There’s been too many games that we’ve lost, far too inconsistent. It’s been a difficult season. It’s been a disappointing season but of course football is about memories, it’s about creating memories, it’s about winning trophies and we have a great opportunity to win a trophy.

“For our fans, it’s what they deserve, so that’s the most important thing.”

Since Amorim took charge, Man Utd have won just three of their 12 away Premier League games, losing five. Last weekend they ended a two-game losing streak with a draw against Bournemouth, but the Red Devils remain winless in there on the road.
