Manchester United are one of the clubs in the best position to sign Bayer Leverkusen defender Jeremie Frimpong this summer, according to Sport BILD.

The Red Devils are preparing for the departure of right-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka and it has been reported that he could bid farewell to the fans at Old Trafford today.

Sport BILD (page 30) claim they could sign Frimpong as his successor. The 23-year-old is ‘clearly inclined’ to leave Leverkusen in the coming weeks.

He currently has a release clause worth €40 million active until the start of the 2024 European Championship and United are well placed to sign him.

Frimpong would be a quality upgrade on Wan-Bissaka

Wan-Bissaka has been a solid performer for United over the past five years. He has been impressive with his one-on-one defending and trademark slide tackles.

However, the 25-year-old’s playing style does not suit the tactical demands of manager Erik ten Hag.

The Dutch tactician prefers full-backs who can invert into midfield and make overlapping runs to provide crosses into the box based on the situation.

Wan-Bissaka has hardly influenced proceedings in the final third under Ten Hag and this could be a prime reason why the club are prepared to offload him soon.

Frimpong, who has been described as ‘special‘ by manager Xabi Alonso, would be a quality upgrade. He has predominantly operated at right wing-back this season, registering 14 goals and 12 assists.

The Dutchman has also played as a traditional right-back in the past. Frimpong should be able to adapt to a more defensive role while adding creativity.

He would be a strong competitor to Diogo Dalot. The Portuguese has been one of United’s best performers with seven goal involvements in 47 appearances this term.
