United’s transfer plans will hinge on the outcome of this season’s Europa League
Manchester United’s summer transfer freedom will hinge on whether the club qualifies for the Champions League, according to reports.
The club are currently competing in the Europa League, which they will need to win outright if they are to make the step up to the Champions League next season. They qualified for the semi-finals on Thursday after a thrilling turnaround sealed by three injury-time goals.
To compete in European football brings a financial windfall for clubs thanks to TV rights deals, with the Champions League landing the biggest kitty. Should they qualify, United are set to pocket at least £80million.
That income will open up new possibilities in the transfer market as head coach Ruben Amorim looks to overhaul his underperforming squad, which sits 14th in the Premier League.
The club are reportedly eyeing Southampton defender Tyler Dibling, and will be able to intensify their pursuit of the 19-year-old once their European fate is decided.
Dibling has established himself as one of the Premier League’s hottest properties despite Southampton’s early relegation this year. The Saints are expected to demand £100m for the player’s services, though that number may fall after such a difficult campaign.

Any money United make from European qualification may also be put towards Bournemouth’s Antoine Semenyo, who has scored eight and assisted four for the Cherries so far this campaign.
Various clubs are reported to be interested in the Ghana international’s services, including Liverpool, Chelsea, Tottenham, and Manchester City, though it is United who have emerged as frontrunners in the race for his signature.
His price tag will be considerable, though. Bournemouth are expected to demand around £70m for Semenyo, whose contract is not due to expire until 2029. He signed an extension in July 2024, just 18 months into the four-and-a-half-year deal he signed upon joining the club from Bristol City in January 2023.
United’s transfer budget will also be bolstered by player sales, with Amorim expected to offload considerable numbers from his squad. Among those on the chopping block are Andre Onana and misfiring striker Rasmus Hojlund, while Jonny Evans, Tom Heaton, and Christian Eriksen are all expected to depart.
There will be two transfer windows this summer due to Chelsea and Man City’s participation in the Club World Cup. It will be open from June 1 to June 10, reopening on June 16 and remaining open through September 1.
