Manchester United have reportedly reached out to Aston Villa to enquire about the availability of Emiliano Martinez.

The Red Devils seem to be adamant about signing a new goalkeeper this summer. However, remain torn between bringing in a new No.1 to replace error-prone Andre Onana, or a new understudy to take over from Altay Bayindir who hasn’t entirely convinced either.

In recent weeks, United have been heavily linked with Martinez, who seemingly bid Aston Villa fans a tearful farewell in his last home fixture of the season, albeit it was later denied by his wife.

Over the past 24 hours or so, several reports claimed that the 2022 World Cup winner has expressed his desire to join MUFC, thus inviting INEOS to launch an attempt to prise him away from Villa Park.

According to Diario Ole (via UtdXclusive), Man Utd have obliged by making ‘official’ contact with Villa to enquire about the terms of a potential transfer.

Having signed a renewal at the start of the season, the Argentinian international is tied to the Villains with a contract valid until June 2029, so his current employers still have strong leverage on his future, and could request a considerable transfer fee to part ways with the custodian.

Hence, it remains to be seen if Man Utd would be willing to go over the top for a 32-year-old goalkeeper, albeit one that has been hailed as the ‘best in the world’ by his compatriot, Lionel Messi.

It should also be mentioned that several sources have revealed that the Red Devils aren’t desperate to offload Onana, despite his recurring blunders, as they don’t consider signing a new shot-stopper an absolute priority this summer.

Nevertheless, the vast majority of the club’s supporters would feel much more confident going into the upcoming campaign with a new goalkeeper, so it remains to be seen how the management will address this particular department.
