Manchester United have learnt that it would reportedly take €60 million to extract Nuno Mendes from Paris Saint-Germain in this January window.
The Red Devils must try and improve their squad in Ruben Amorim’s first transfer window under tight financial restrictions.
Alongside the striker position, the most urgent need the club faces is the necessity of signing a specialised left wing back for Amorim’s 3-4-3 system.
United have been linked to a plethora of options such as Milos Kerkez, Rayan Ait-Nouri and Patrick Dorgu, after earlier rumours of Alphonso Davies have quietened down.
Another name that has gained traction recently is Nuno Mendes and it was relayed here that United have already lodged a bid for the talented 22 year old.
The Independent report that “Manchester United need a sale in order to meet Paris Saint-Germain’s €60m valuation of Nuno Mendes, with Ruben Amorim and the new INEOS leadership keen to start a badly-desired overhaul.”
The beginning of the window has started in depressing fashion for United fans after reports have exposed the extent of the club’s financial issues, as it was reported that even academy graduates like Kobbie Mainoo and Alejandro Garnacho are not off-limits if a suitable bid were to arrive for them.
Interestingly, the report from The Independent mentions that United may have a carrot to offer for Mendes as “it is understood that Garnacho has come up in talks between United and PSG”.
Nonetheless, there has been no suggestion that the Argentine could be part of any formal swap deal for the Portuguese left back as of yet.
The report also mentions that “as it stands, however, there is a considerable difference in terms of asking price and United’s valuation with the club even short on Mendes’ desired salary.”
Therefore, a January move can probably be knocked on the head but reports from Footmercato claim that United won’t try and pry the left back away from PSG in January but will make their move in the summer if contract negotiations continue to be unproductive.
What’s more, Mendes is said to be “very interested” in a move to Old Trafford to reunite with former boss Amorim and United may just fancy their chances of landing the player when they hopefully have more financial flexibility in the summer months.
In another twist however, PSG are reportedly not overly worried by the stand-off with Mendes. They believe it is just a normal part of posturing during contract negotiations and will continue to try and thrash out a new deal in the coming weeks.
