Manchester United are one of three Premier League teams to have asked for information on Juventus midfielder Douglas Luiz, according to reports in Italy.
The Red Devils are named alongside Fulham and Everton as holding an interest in bringing the Brazilian back to the English top-flight after his €50m move from Aston Villa last year.
Gazzetta dello Sport claim that while all three clubs have enquired after the 27-year-old “no concrete offers have yet arrived on Juventus’ table”.
The brief report makes no mention of the extensive rumours of a swap deal involving Luiz and United’s exiled winger Jadon Sancho, who looks to be edging towards a move to Turin.
The complete omission of Sancho’s name certainly casts doubt on the notion that an informal agreement for a player exchange is already in place, although it’s hard to believe no discussions have happened on the subject.
Luiz would be a smart option for United to reinforce Ruben Amorim’s midfield with extra Premier League-proven legs to replace the aging Casemiro in the middle of the park.
Despite a disappointing spell in Italy the Brazilian’s quality is not up for debate after he dazzled at Villa Park, and the fact that he is firmly out of Juventus manager Igor Tudor’s plans makes him a very achievable option.
Gazzetta dello Sport believe that it is “unlikely” that Luiz will still be in black and white come the end of the transfer window, although do not indicate what sort of fee would be required.
Combined with the Old Lady’s determination to sign Sancho, United hold all the cards to bring the player to Old Trafford and see off any challenge from Fulham or Everton.
It was reported last week that the Serie A giants are “accelerating” for the English winger, so the two clubs look set to do business with or without Luiz’s name on the documents.
The 25-year-old’s infamously high wages have been a sticking point for any Old Trafford exit, but such is his desire to move to the Allianz Stadium he is thought to be willing to reduce his salary demands.
Juventus are also believed to have thrown Dusan Vlahovic’s name into the mix in a bid to get a deal for Sancho over the line.
