Manchester United “expect” Marcus Rashford to join a club abroad this summer with no prospect of a return to the first-team at Old Trafford, according to a report.

The Manchester Evening News reveals United executives believe Rashford, 27, will reject a permanent switch to Aston Villa – where he is currently on loan – in favour of a move to Europe.

Rashford joined the Birmingham side at the end of the January transfer window on loan until the end of season after a public fallout with United head coach Ruben Amorim. And he has enjoyed a return to form under Unai Emery’s tutelage with the Spanish manager key to convincing the forward to swap Old Trafford for Villa Park.

The forward even received an England call-up after Thomas Tuchel was impressed by his performances for the Villans. He started both of the Three Lions’ recent World Cup qualifiers in March.

The 27-year-old has scored four goals and provided six assists in 17 appearances for Villa, with Emery opting to start him over Ollie Watkins for the season-defining clash with Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League quarter-final.

A £40 million buy-option is included in the loan deal which Villa could trigger at the end of the season, but there have been no negotiations over such a deal as per the BBC.

There are conflicting reports on Rashford’s plans this summer, with the 27-year-old thought to harbour ambitions of a “dream move” to Barcelona. But another report relayed by The Peoples Person suggests the Carrington graduate is happy at Villa Park and wants to remain beyond the summer.

PSG are another club who hold a long-standing interest in Rashford with the England international consistently producing excellent performances against the Ligue 1 champions, but there are a long line of brilliant wingers already in place at the Parc de Princes.

But the one team which there is absolute certainty on Rashford’s future is United, who have “no intention of reintegrating him into their squad,” according to the Manchester Evening News.

Interestingly, the report reveals, Old Trafford officials expect Rashford to push for a move abroad, suggesting the 27-year-old has no intentions of remaining with Villa past his loan move.

Rashford will not entertain a salary cut to help facilitate an exit, however. The forward earns around £325,000 a week with United and has three years remaining on his current deal.

Manchester Evening News states, “Senior United figures have reiterated Rashford is not in their plans for next season after head coach Ruben Amorim omitted him from 11 out of 12 matchday squads prior to Rashford’s move to Villa.

“Sources close to Rashford insist he is not prepared to take a wage cut on his £325,000-a-week salary, which would restrict him to a handful of potential suitors in the summer. He is under contract at United until 2028.”

Barcelona would be capable of meeting this substantial wage packet but there is little interest at Camp Nou in doing so, given Rashford would be signed as a squad option behind the brilliant attacking trio of Raphinha, Robert Lewandowski and Lamine Yamal.

Which produces a difficult situation for the Red Devils. If Rashford is unwilling to join Villa on a permanent deal, it rules out his biggest suitor this summer in England. And if the 27-year-old refuses to compromise on wages, it will likely rule out any teams interested in a move on the continent.

This would leave United between a rock and a hard place over a player who Amorim has no interest in seeing return to Old Trafford, but remains the club’s highest earner ahead of a summer where every penny will count.
