Following his sensational display at the back, Manchester United defender Harry Maguire revealed he’s optimistic about extending his stay at the club beyond the current campaign.
The 31-year-old has been a stalwart for the Red Devils since making the £80M switch from Leicester City in the summer of 2019.
While his recent campaigns have been marred by recurring blunders, the England international seems to be hitting his stride under the guidance of Ruben Amorim who has now entrusted him with the central role in the back-three, similar to the position he held with the Three Lions during Gareth Southgate’s reign.
On Sunday, Maguire delivered the goods, shutting down Erling Haaland in the Manchester Derby. The Red Devils eventually emerged victorious by two goals to one thanks to a dramatic late comeback led by Amad Diallo.
After the contest, the big defender was interrogated about his future at the club. His contract will expire at the end of the season, but United have an exclusive option to trigger a one-year renewal.

Maguire revealed that he and the club have recently made some progress in their negotiations, so he feels confident about his future at Carrington.
“Listen, I haven’t really thought about it. I’ve still got this year to go with an option in their hands,” said the Englishman in his post-match chat with journalists (via Sky Sports). “But, yeah, all the signs are positive at the moment and the chat that I’m having is really positive.”
Maguire had also received special praise from Amorim for excelling in the central role.
“Maguire is perfect when you play with the three defenders. I think in the middle [he] is perfect. Then the way that the striker that they have with the long balls, you need to be really strong and so was perfect for him.
“Not just Harry, all the guys, defended really well.”
