Aaron Ramsdale is likely to leave Southampton this summer, just nine months after joining the club from Arsenal in an £18 million deal. As reported by The Mirror, the 26-year-old is being tracked by Manchester United and West Ham United, with Southampton already exploring options for his replacement following relegation to the Championship.

Ramsdale’s move to Southampton was framed as a chance to reset his career and return to the England fold after falling behind David Raya in the pecking order at Arsenal. However, the reality has been harsh. Despite his best efforts, Southampton endured a torrid season, and their early relegation has now prompted discussions around an exit.
Ramsdale’s post on Instagram following the club’s demotion was heartfelt: “This is a special club with amazing fans – we are sorry that it has ended like this. You deserve better.”
For Southampton, the planning for next season is already underway, and their interest in Sunderland’s Anthony Patterson and Angers’ Yahia Fofana signals intent to reshape the squad with an eye on youth and value. Patterson, 24, is also being monitored by Tottenham and Burnley, and may be available should Sunderland fail to secure promotion via the play-offs.
Ramsdale is understood to be keen on remaining in the Premier League. Manchester United’s goalkeeping depth is under scrutiny, with uncertainty around André Onana’s long-term status, while West Ham are looking to add experienced cover.

While no formal offers have been lodged at this stage, interest is expected to develop as clubs firm up their summer transfer plans. With Southampton open to offers and Ramsdale unwilling to drop to the Championship for a third time, a move seems inevitable.
This would be Ramsdale’s third career relegation, having previously suffered the drop with Bournemouth and Sheffield United. Yet that didn’t prevent Arsenal from investing in him in 2021, where he excelled across two campaigns before being replaced.

Despite the setbacks, his shot-stopping, distribution and leadership continue to make him a viable target for top-flight clubs. At 26, he still offers long-term value, particularly for clubs that require a confident and vocal presence in goal.
This interest feels like more of a reaction than a plan. Ramsdale is a solid keeper with Premier League experience, but is he the long-term solution at Old Trafford? After committing significant resources to André Onana, bringing in another high-profile goalkeeper might muddy the waters further.
For West Ham, however, there’s genuine intrigue. Ramsdale could represent an upgrade or at least strong competition for Lukasz Fabianski and Alphonse Areola, both of whom have been reliable but inconsistent. His command of the box and vocal leadership might bring stability to a defence that’s lacked identity in recent months.
That said, his form at Southampton hasn’t been transformational. Three relegations, regardless of context, cast a long shadow. If West Ham pursue him, it should be as part of a broader defensive rebuild, not a headline signing on which hopes are pinned. For both clubs, the question isn’t just whether Ramsdale can still deliver, but whether he can be the difference between mid-table stability and genuine progression.
