Liverpool Eye Rodrygo as Real Madrid Drop Asking Price – A Strategic Opportunity?

Rodrygo Goes, once tipped as the next big star at Real Madrid, is now facing a potential exit from the Bernabéu. After a personally underwhelming season overshadowed by the brilliance of Vinicius Junior, Jude Bellingham and new arrival Kylian Mbappé, the Brazilian winger is reportedly considering his options.

Cadena SER, via their El Larguero programme and journalist Antón Meana, have revealed that Madrid “intend to make a major sale” this summer, with Rodrygo among the most likely candidates to leave. The Spanish outlet states: “With so many signings, there has to be a significant sale. It’s pure mathematics and something that has historically been done at Real Madrid. And this first departure could be that of Rodrygo Goes.”

While the 23-year-old is officially valued at €100m, the report claims Madrid would be willing to let him go for closer to €80m (£67m) in order to balance the books. That figure, while still substantial, is a significant reduction from the triple-digit price tag many had assumed was non-negotiable.

Premier League Clubs on Alert

Cadena SER further reported that Rodrygo’s agents have proactively contacted two Premier League clubs as recently as Wednesday, clarifying that it was the player’s camp initiating discussions: “Rodrygo’s agents… were offering him to them, and not the other way round.”

Liverpool, Arsenal and Manchester City are all said to have shown interest in the Brazilian forward. The appeal is understandable – Rodrygo’s versatility is unmatched, and he has often been praised for his tactical intelligence and adaptability. Brazil’s assistant coach Matheus Bachi described him as “a chameleon,” highlighting his ability to adapt to different systems and roles.

It is also worth noting that Liverpool have tracked Rodrygo since his breakout days at Santos. A long-standing admiration, now combined with a potential market opportunity, makes this summer a key moment for the Merseyside club.

Rodrygo’s Stance: Torn Between Loyalty and Opportunity

Despite the mounting speculation, Rodrygo’s own preferences appear somewhat conflicted. According to Cadena SER, “Rodrygo wants to stay, he’s happy at Madrid, but if they put a tie on him and want to sell him, he’ll have no shortage of suitors.”

This hints at a complex internal situation. While Rodrygo may not be agitating for a transfer, he is realistic about his place in the squad. With the arrivals of Mbappé and other potential signings in Madrid’s pipeline, regular minutes may become even harder to come by.

The player reportedly intends to hold talks with Real Madrid’s incoming manager before making a final decision on his future. Those discussions could ultimately determine whether Liverpool’s hopes are realised.

Why Liverpool Make Sense as a Destination

Liverpool, under Arne Slot, have just clinched the Premier League title in the Dutchman’s first season. With a dynamic, high-intensity system now fully embedded at Anfield, the Reds are expected to add attacking depth and tactical fluidity to maintain momentum.

Rodrygo’s skillset – his pace, decision-making in tight spaces, and ability to play anywhere across the front line – aligns closely with what Slot demands from his attackers. More importantly, Liverpool’s recruitment team is known for pouncing when value emerges in the market.

“It’s a deal that would cost around 80 million (Euros)… but market experts value Rodrygo at 100 million (Euros),” the Cadena SER report notes. For Liverpool, that £67m fee could be viewed as a bargain – especially for a 23-year-old with Champions League pedigree.

Our View – Anfield Index Analysis

From a Liverpool supporter’s perspective, this report is full of promise. With Arne Slot leading a new era at Anfield, the prospect of adding a player of Rodrygo’s calibre is tantalising. He’s young, experienced at the highest level, and hungry for a central role – the exact profile of player Liverpool tend to bet on successfully.

Rodrygo wouldn’t just be an alternative to Mohamed Salah, Luis Díaz or Darwin Núñez – he could rotate with all of them. His intelligent movement and work rate would fit seamlessly into Slot’s intense pressing system, and he’s already proven capable of scoring in big European games.

While competition from Arsenal and Manchester City must be taken seriously, Liverpool’s track record of developing top talent and the chance to be a central figure in a title-defending team could sway the Brazilian’s decision.

This feels like a deal Liverpool would have walked away from a year ago at €100m – but at €80m? That changes the conversation. Rodrygo might just be the marquee addition that keeps Liverpool at the top of English football under Slot’s stewardship.
