FSV Mainz completed the signing of Austrian U21 defender Konstantin Schopp from Sturm Graz on a free transfer. Sturm Graz won the Austrian Bundesliga for the second year running, but Schopp only played two games for the first team this season.
That includes his Champions League debut against Sporting CP in the league phase. The 1.95m tall center-back has signed a four-year contract after following in his father’s footsteps of playing in the Bundesliga. Markus Schopp played two seasons in the Bundesliga with the then-unrelegatable Hamburger SV.
Konstantin Schopp is a regular fixture with the Austria U21 team, and he’ll also join the squad for next week’s friendlies. Sturm Graz U19 reached the round of 16 in the UEFA Youth League this season.
“Konstantin Schopp is a highly talented central defender who possesses both the physical and technical attributes needed to succeed in the Bundesliga,” said sporting director Niko Bungert, who was a solid center-back for the club in his playing days.
Bungert also emphasized that he needs time to further develop in Germany. “This club is known for helping young players grow, and many Austrians have taken important steps here, so it was an easy decision for me,” said Schopp after signing his contract.
“I had a good feeling from the very beginning. I’m really looking forward to getting to know the club, the fans, and the amazing atmosphere at the MEWA ARENA.”
