Manchester United midfielder Kobe Mainoo has reportedly told the club that he is open to leaving Old Trafford on loan this season.
The 20-year-old academy graduate has found game time hard to come by under manager Ruben Amorim in the Premier League.
He has only featured once this term, starting in United’s Carabao Cup defeat against Grimsby.
According to The Athletic, Mainoo expressed his wish to go out on loan during a meeting with the club on Thursday.
The midfielder made it clear that he is not seeking a permanent exit, but feels his current situation is slowing his progress.
He stressed that regular minutes are vital for his career development, especially with the FIFA World Cup drawing nearer.
United, however, made their stance firm. The club view him as a valuable part of the squad and will not sanction a temporary move away.
Mainoo’s talent has not gone unnoticed across Europe. Reports suggest that Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid have been keeping an eye on the midfielder’s situation.
Both clubs are said to admire his qualities and could explore the possibility of securing his services.
The youngster first broke into the United team in November 2023 under Erik ten Hag.
He then established himself as a key player, starting 24 of the final 26 league games of that campaign. His performances quickly turned heads and raised his profile.
In March 2024, Mainoo received his first senior England call-up and made his debut in a friendly against Brazil at Wembley.
He was later named in Gareth Southgate’s squad for the European Championship.
The midfielder featured regularly in Germany, starting four games as England reached the final.
His assured displays in midfield earned praise, and he is now viewed as one of the brightest young players in English football.
United supporters will be watching closely to see how the club handles his development, with Mainoo determined to play more minutes this season.
