Celtic take their first step in their defence of the League Cup tomorrow when Falkirk arrive in the East End of Glasgow for some Friday night football.

Midfielder Luke McCowan is looking forward to the game against a side who arrived here last September in the same competition after the Celts had beaten Hibernian in the previous round.

When John McGlynn brought his side to Celtic Park then, they managed to take the lead twice in the game before the Hoops ran out 5-2 winners against a team who wanted to play football.

McCowan said: “It’s another competition you want to go and do well in it like every other year.

'And it’s a defence where we want to go and put a good performance in, especially at home as well.'

“They’ve got a coach there that’s been here and everybody speaks so highly of, and you know that it’s a team that he coaches really well, and demands a lot from them, so they come to Celtic Park with high standards of their own.”

Following the game, the Celts turn their attention to FC Kairat in the UEFA Champions League play-off as the games keep on coming.

The midfielder added: “This is the time when the manager tells us it’s a squad game and everybody is needed with the amount of games.

“Obviously we will be travelling to Kazakhstan the following week, which is eight hours away and you need your squad of players.

“It’s just about being ready if you’re called upon to go and make an impact."

There is strength in midfield for the manager to utilise, and McCowan said: “Looking at our squad on paper, the midfield is a really hard place to get into, and once you’re in, you’ve just got to try and hold your spot.

“As you know with the matches it’s always about rotation and just being ready to be called upon."

It’s something that McCowan and Celtic have been through before, and the midfielder agrees that winning trophies whets the appetite for the early rounds of competitions.

He said: “It’s about going and defending the competitions that you hold and putting on good performances.

“We know the importance of this game early on in the cup but you want to keep pushing and working hard, especially at home where you want to give your fans a good game.”
