Luka Modric will sign a one year contract extension at Real Madrid after the UEFA Champions League final.

The picture in Madrid has changed significantly in recent days with Modric’s long term midfield partner Toni Kroos confirming his intention to retire.

Both players are out of contract in June, with the club continuing their policy of offering one year extensions to players aged over 30, ahead of some key calls.

Kroos initially looked the more likely to renew, based on his greater first team role this season, but Modric remained open minded.

With Kroos now moving on, Modric and Real Madrid are pragmatic over the chance to retain his experience, and a deal is close to completion.

As per reports from Relevo, the focus is solely on facing Borussia Dortmund at Wembley Stadium on June 1, but the contract will be wrapped up immediately after.

Modric will then join up with the Croatia squad ahead of Euro 2024 with their opening game of the tournament against Spain on June 15.
