This transfer window has been hugely successful for Liverpool already, but when it comes to Luis Diaz’ future, it still remains a will he leave or will he stay scenario.
The Colombian enjoyed his most fruitful season as a Red, scoring 17 goals in all competitions and assisting five goals. At the age of 28, the No. 7 still has plenty of time at the top level. However, constant rumours over the last few weeks have been circulating, amid interest from Barcelona and Saudi Arabia.
And according to the most recent news, Diaz and his agents are furious with Liverpool.
According to Colombian journalist Pipe Sierra, Luis Díaz and his entourage are extremely upset with Liverpool. The information from Sierra suggests that the winger is unhappy that the Reds keep changing their stance and they have “gone back on their word” over a potential transfer.
Additionally, the news also says that it isn’t the first time this has happened, and the Premier League champions also did the same during contract negotiations.
As of now, Luis Diaz has two years left on his deal at Anfield and is reportedly only on £55,000 a week, pennies when compared to other players of his position within the league. The 28 year-old is entitled to feel like he should be earning more, and he has earned an increase on this current deal.
It is likely a very frustrating situation for the Colombian international. Ever since his move back in 2022, he has remained a key member of the squad and, at times, carried the attacking burden. He and his team feel undervalued, and while that may be the case, Liverpool are also well within their rights to stick to their guns.
Liverpool are under no obligation to sell or increase the wages of Luis Diaz. At the moment, the club has got a great deal. A player of Luis Diaz’ quality, only costing them a total salary of £2.86 million a year, is a scenario most clubs would like to find themselves in.
Other players in his position across the league are earning much more. For example, Gabriel Martinelli is earning £180k per week, Grealish and Rashford are on £300k p/w, and even rumoured target Anthony Gordon is earning triple the salary of the former Porto man.
Unfortunately for the Colombian, there doesn’t seem to be much room for negotiations. According to David Ornstein, the club are willing to let the player stay and run down his contract, even if it means he leaves on a free in 2027. At this point, Diaz will be 30 years old, and the Reds will likely have a younger replacement already lined up.
The club are well within their rights to hold him, and if their plan is to keep him until the end of his deal, then that is simply smart business. Getting someone in who is either just as good or better than Luis Diaz on similar wages would be one of the hardest tasks of this or the next transfer window.
Diaz is an incredibly important player for this current Liverpool side, and while he may feel like he deserves to be rewarded for his role over the last few years, he may have to accept the reality that the Premier League champions are playing a longer game, one where emotions take a back seat and smarter decisions take the fore.
Despite the potential behind-the-scenes fury, Luis Diaz has always remained a model professional. There are no signs that the player will allow these talks to affect the performances on the pitch or that he would down tools or cause issues in the dressing room.
That said, every player has their breaking point, and Liverpool will still need to manage the situation and make sure one of their star men remains the professional player he has always been if they want to .
