Celtic FC Women are back in action tonight (Wednesday, April 16) at New Douglas Park in Hamilton as they face Hibs in the SWPL.
The Ghirls come into the match on the back of a 1-1 draw against Rangers on Sunday thanks to a second-half equaliser from Amy Gallacher, and it was a result which keeps the Celts in the hunt for the league title.
And, speaking to Celtic TV ahead of the match, Lucy Ashworth-Clifford said that the atmosphere in the dressing room after the weekend’s draw was an improvement on previous weeks, as she backed the Celts to keep fighting until the end of the season.
“After the game, the mood was good,” she said. “It’s definitely different to the atmosphere after the last few games where we’ve had defeats.
“But we got a draw against a good team, so here we are.
‘We’re a team that will never give up, you can see that in our games.’
“The quality has been lacking but we’ve never given up and you can see that with how we keep scoring towards the end. That’s the way we are.
“We’ve got seven games left and we know that we can take 21 points. Hopefully we do and we can lift the title at the end.”
As well as being a vitally important three points up for grabs tonight, the Hoops also have a chance to rectify this season’s previous results against Hibernian, with the Edinburgh side winning 1-0 in the last meeting and holding Celtic to a 0-0 draw earlier in the campaign.
Hibs are also title contenders this season, and Ashworth-Clifford says that she is expecting a tough test from the capital side, as she highlighted the importance of using the experience of clinching the league title on the final day of last season to drive the team on to the finish line.
She added: “Hibs are really good, and they’ve been exciting to watch this season. That shows the calibre and quality in the league.
“They have pace and strength, and with the last result against them, we know that we need to give our all.
“They’re a team that will fight, and hopefully we can fight a lot harder.
“The last few games haven’t been what we wanted, but we have to keep trying to use that momentum that we have from last season, look at what it got us this season and keep using it in our stride.
“We have players like Amy Gallacher getting us out of the dirt again, so I’m sure she can do it, just as the rest of the girls will.”
