Manchester United’s search for a midfielder has taken them to Spain.
After transforming their attack, United underlined their ambition by contacting Brighton & Hove Albion over a potential deal for Carlos Baleba early this month.
However, the Seagulls had no desire to engage in any serious talks for Baleba, with owner Tony Bloom thought to be determined to keep hold of his star midfielder for at least another season.
United are expected to keep an eye on Baleba and they may make a move for him in 2026. However, it would be naive to end the transfer window without addressing the side’s midfield.
It seems Ineos are exploring the market for an imminent solution. Earlier today, The Peoples Person relayed a report claiming Sevilla midfielder Lucien Agoume is on United’s shortlist.
The 23-year-old Frenchman is allegedly viewed as a “cheaper alternative to Baleba.” However, Sevilla are reluctant to lose him on the cheap.
According to Spanish outlet Ficherio, as relayed by Teamtalk, United are “willing to offer a fee between 25 and 30 million euros” for Agoume.
However, Sevilla’s director of football, Antonio Cordon, is reportedly referring all suitors to the dynamic midfielder’s release clause.
Sevilla signed the youngster from Inter Milan in 2024 and inserted a release clause worth €40m. United are currently not prepared to meet the La Liga outfit’s asking price.
United have also been linked with Adam Wharton, but Crystal Palace are not expected to entertain any offers for the Englishman at this stage of the window.
As such, there are very few better alternatives than Agoume, even at Sevilla’s valuation.
Amorim ideally wants his deepest midfielder to cover large areas of space, spot dangers out-of-possession and turn defence into attack with quick line-breaking passes. Agoume ticks a lot of those boxes.
