Lucas Chevalier (23) received his first-ever call-up to the France squad last week. It was a reward for his fine form at the start of the season. The goalkeeper put in some match-winning performances, especially in the UEFA Champions League, against the likes of Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid.
However, calls for Chevalier to integrate Les Bleus’ set-up precede this season. Since breaking through at Lille OSC, he has consistently impressed, just as Mke Maignan, now at AC Milan, once did for Les Dogues. Since Hugo Lloris’ retirement from international football, it has been Maignan who has inherited the No.1 jersey for France.
Naturally, the ambitious Chevalier is targeting Maignan’s spot, however, he believes that one crucial thing will have to change for him to do that – his club. “I play for Lille. All the players play for big European clubs. Lille is a big European club but there are steps above,” said the Frenchman.
In Tuesday’s press conference, he added, “The No.1 spot depends on a very big club. You have to have this lucidity.” Chevalier, whose contract with LOSC runs until the summer of 2027, is valued at €25m on Transfermarkt.
