Manchester City travel to Anfield on Sunday afternoon hoping to stop the rot across competitions by securing their first win in any contest in over a month.

City thought they were en route to doing just that in midweek as Feyenoord visited the Etihad Stadium, taking a three-goal lead into the final 15 minutes of the contest only to concede three of their own quick succession to share the points on matchday five of the league phase.

Very few of Manchester City’s stars are covering themselves in any glory at the moment, and Pep Guardiola will be desperate to welcome back Ruben Dias to hold together his defensive rearguard, whilst Mateo Kovacic’s injury is another added complication in a depleted midfield.

Liverpool could not be in more contrasting form to the Premier League champions, topping both the English top-flight and UEFA Champions League tables heading into December, and defeating Real Madrid 2-0 at home in midweek.

As Manchester City look to remain within touching distance of the top of the Premier League table, and not fall 11 points behind through defeat to Liverpool, here is everything you need to know ahead of the encounter at Anfield!

Team News

Arne Slot will be without a number of key first-team players for the visit of Manchester City across his squad, although the return of Trent Alexander-Arnold to his options will no doubt be a welcome boost.

The latest blows and additions to Liverpool’s treatment table came in midweek against Real Madrid at Anfield, with defensive options in Ibrahima Konate and Conor Bradley both expected to miss the visit of Manchester City.

Additional absentees for the Anfield side are likely to include Konstantinos Tsimikas, Federico Chiesa, Diogo Jota, and mainstay first-team goalkeeper and Brazil international star, Alisson Becker.

As for Manchester City, both Rodri and Oscar Bobb remain the longer-term absentees for the foreseeable, while Mateo Kovacic is into a second of four expected weeks of absence due to an injury sustained on international duty.

John Stones is also expected to remain absent having sustained a problem in the first-half of Manchester City’s 0-4 home defeat to Tottenham last weekend, with Ruben Dias and Jeremy Doku returning to availability for Pep Guardiola over the last few days.

Head To Head

Liverpool and Manchester City have faced eachother a total of 196 times in all competitions across their respective histories, with the latter having won only 50 of those meetings, drawing 53, and losing 93 contests with their Merseyside rivals.

Despite that record, City are however unbeaten in all of their last four meetings with Liverpool, drawing 1-1 at home and away during last season’s Premier League double-header, winning 4-1 at home in the Premier League before then, and 3-2 in the League Cup.

Across Manchester City’s 95 outings at Anfield however, they have only won 15 times and just the once under Pep Guardiola during the Covid hit era of the division. A total of 24 matches at Anfield between these two sides have ended as a draw, and 56 resulting in a Liverpool win.

Statistics

Liverpool have won just one of their last nine Premier League games against Manchester City (D5, L3), a 1-0 home victory in October 2022.

Manchester City have won just one of their last 21 Premier League away games against Liverpool (D7, L13), beating them 4-1 in February 2021. They have not won at Anfield with fans in attendance since May 2003 (2-1).

Manchester City have won five of their last six Premier League games against sides starting the day top of the table (D1). However, their last such defeat was a 3-1 loss against Liverpool at Anfield in November 2019, with the Reds going on to lift the title that season.
