Liverpool have submitted their opening offer for Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Florian Wirtz with the proposal in excess of €100m (£83.9m) including add-ons.

The bid represents a club-record for Liverpool, eclipsing the £75m paid to sign Virgil van Dijk from Southampton in January 2018. Wirtz has indicated his desire to join Liverpool despite rival interest from Bayern Munich.

Leverkusen are understood to value the 22-year-old at €150m (£125.9m). However, there is an expectation that a compromise between the clubs will be found.

Fabrizio Romano has reported that negotiations between the two teams are underway, following the conclusion of the Premier League campaign.

Liverpool are hoping for a swift resolution. There is good communication between the clubs, with the Reds having already reached an agreement to sign Jeremie Frimpong from the German side.

The transfer for Wirtz could eclipse the British transfer record, with Liverpool determined to seal the signing of one of Europe’s top young talents.

Wirtz was named Bundesliga Player of the Season in 2023/24 after helping Leverkusen to a maiden German title without losing a game. Leverkusen also won the DFB-Pokal to seal a German league and cup double.

This season, the midfielder has scored 16 goals and created 15 more in all competitions. He is one of just two players across Europe’s top five leagues to return 10+ goals and 10+ assists in league action, alongside Liverpool winger Mohamed Salah.

At international level, he has scored six times in 29 caps for the Germany national team.
