Liverpool’s summer business has taken a more urgent turn with Ibrahima Konate’s contract negotiations at a standstill. As reported by Football Insider, the club have set an August deadline to resolve the future of the French defender, who will enter the final year of his current deal in just two weeks. With Real Madrid circling and no progress made in months, the situation is quickly becoming a high-stakes dilemma for the Premier League champions.
The whispers out of Spain are growing louder. According to Marca’s Jose Felix Diaz, Real Madrid have placed Konate on their radar, identifying him as a possible 2026 free transfer target. Having already lured Trent Alexander-Arnold to the Bernabeu earlier this year, Los Blancos appear ready to exploit any hesitation at Anfield.

Konate’s demand for “big money” to extend his stay, as reported by Graeme Bailey, suggests the player wants his value to be reflected in his wage. Currently on £70,000 per week per Capology, the 26-year-old finds himself below the club’s top earners despite being a key starter under Arne Slot.
The situation is even more precarious considering the potential departure of Andy Robertson, who is reportedly being targeted by Atletico Madrid. With Alexander-Arnold already gone, losing Konate would mean Arne Slot might have to reconstruct the backbone of his title-winning defence just one season into his reign.
“Liverpool appear keen to avoid a repeat of another such soap opera,” Football Insider noted in reference to the Alexander-Arnold transfer saga. Setting a firm deadline before the end of August reflects the club’s desire to maintain control. Should no resolution be reached, FSG may consider selling Konate during the final fortnight of the transfer window.
This is hardly a straightforward decision. Konate remains crucial to Slot’s system, and with no elite replacement lined up, any departure would be deeply felt. While Jarell Quansah and Joe Gomez have both impressed, neither has consistently operated at Konate’s level when fully fit and in form.
If Liverpool are forced to choose between a summer sale or the risk of losing him for free next year, the former appears more pragmatic. “FSG could then be open to transfer offers in the final fortnight of this summer’s transfer window,” the report explained. With Real Madrid and other European giants waiting in the wings, a substantial offer may be the only way to salvage value.
Still, this could send the wrong message to the squad and supporters after a triumphant title-winning campaign. With Konate still just 26 and entering his prime, letting him go under contractual pressure would be a significant dent in Liverpool’s long-term planning.
Slot’s success last season was built on tactical clarity and stability. With pre-season looming, any distraction in the dressing room — particularly involving a player as influential as Konate — could disrupt preparations for a title defence and Champions League return.
Liverpool need to move swiftly. The hope remains that both sides can “come to an amicable agreement which’d keep him on Merseyside for the long-term,” as Football Insider put it. But with two months ticking down, and Madrid waiting, this is a race against time.
For many Liverpool supporters, this situation feels all too familiar. First Trent, now possibly Konate? Fans are already anxious about what looks like a quiet transfer window so far, and the idea of losing another integral defender just months after winning the title seems unthinkable. There’s a genuine fear that FSG, often accused of being cautious with wage structures, might once again underestimate a player’s worth until it’s too late.
Konate might not be the loudest name in the squad, but he’s been immense when fit. His pace, physicality, and aerial dominance are rare assets, especially in Europe. With Robertson also under threat and Virgil van Dijk not getting any younger, losing Konate now would feel like handing over the keys to the city.
Anxious supporters will be asking: why let another world-class player walk into Real Madrid’s arms? And if FSG are seriously considering selling, does that suggest short-term thinking over sustained success? The call to action from fans is clear — get this deal done. Pay him what he deserves, show ambition, and protect the foundation of a title-winning side.
