Liverpool’s summer transfer plans appear to be taking shape, with the left-back position emerging as a key area for reinforcement. As reported by the Daily Mail, the Reds are actively scouting potential replacements—or at the very least, long-term successors—for Andy Robertson, who turned 31 this week. Kostas Tsimikas, though a capable deputy, has not cemented himself as the club’s future first-choice option.

With Arne Slot taking the reins at Anfield this summer, it’s crucial that Liverpool get this signing right. The modern game demands a left-back who can seamlessly blend defensive solidity with attacking output, and several names have surfaced as potential solutions.
According to the Daily Mail, Bournemouth’s Milos Kerkez is the standout candidate for the role. The 21-year-old Hungarian has caught the eye with his relentless energy, overlapping runs, and ability to contribute in the final third—qualities that align well with Liverpool’s high-intensity playing style.
Richard Henczi, a close associate of Kerkez, has stated that Liverpool’s interest is progressing at an “advanced” stage. However, Bournemouth are under no pressure to sell and will reportedly demand a fee in the region of £40-45 million.

Kerkez’s impressive numbers support his suitability for a move to Anfield. No full-back has played more Premier League minutes this season than him, and he ranks among the league’s best for total sprints, distance covered, and final-third passing. Additionally, his previous working relationship with Liverpool’s new sporting director, Richard Hughes—who signed him at Bournemouth—could be a crucial factor in negotiations.
However, a potential hurdle is Kerkez’s childhood support for Manchester United. The defender has openly admired club legend Nemanja Vidic, and United were interested in signing him last summer before opting for Patrick Dorgu instead. While allegiances as a youth don’t necessarily dictate future career choices, it could play a part in the final decision.
While Kerkez is the front-runner, Liverpool are casting a wide net, with other candidates under consideration.
The 19-year-old Dutchman has amassed significant first-team experience with Ajax, playing 65 Eredivisie games despite his young age. Hato is more intricate in possession compared to Kerkez, making him an interesting tactical option for Slot. His recent visit to Anfield—hosted by Liverpool midfielder Ryan Gravenberch—sparked speculation, but sources insist it was merely a personal trip.

Cardona’s rise has been impressive, having joined Villarreal from Las Palmas on a free transfer. Liverpool have monitored his progress over the past 18 months, and while he may not be the marquee name fans are hoping for, he fits the profile of a progressive left-back who could thrive in an attacking system.

The versatile Italian has played both as a left-back and right winger for Juventus this season, making him an intriguing option. However, Manchester City are reportedly leading the race for his signature, making this a difficult deal to pull off.

Liverpool’s recruitment team has also used AI-driven scouting tools like PLAIER to analyse possible left-back options. This process has identified:
With so many options available, Liverpool will have to balance experience, affordability, and stylistic fit when making their final decision.
While Liverpool are clearly preparing for life after Robertson, the Scottish international remains an integral figure in the squad. His leadership, experience, and relentless work rate continue to make him a key player, and he has shown no signs of willingly stepping aside.

Slot may look to gradually phase in a younger alternative, but Robertson’s current form suggests he still has plenty to offer at the highest level. Any new signing will have to earn their place in the side rather than walking straight into the starting XI.
As Liverpool fans, this is exactly the kind of proactive planning we want to see from the club. Robertson has been a legendary figure at Anfield, but even the greats need succession plans. The idea of signing a young, dynamic left-back who can eventually take over the reins makes complete sense.
Kerkez feels like the perfect fit for Liverpool’s system. His pressing intensity, work rate, and ability to contribute in attack tick all the boxes. Yes, there’s the childhood Manchester United connection, but let’s be real—if a move to Anfield is on the table and Champions League football is part of the project, those old allegiances won’t matter. If anything, Dominik Szoboszlai being in his ear during international duty might help nudge him towards Merseyside.

That being said, Hato is another exciting option. With Slot’s Ajax background, he could be tempted to bring in a player who already understands his style of football. The fact that Gravenberch invited him to Anfield suggests there’s already some chemistry there, which could be valuable.
For those wanting a Premier League-proven option, Robinson or Aït-Nouri might be safer bets. However, Liverpool have traditionally gone for players on an upward trajectory rather than established stars. That’s why someone like Kerkez or Hato makes more sense from a long-term perspective.
Overall, it’s reassuring to see Liverpool’s recruitment team actively searching for the next key piece of the puzzle. With Robertson still performing at a high level, there’s no need for a rushed decision, but getting a deal done this summer would allow for a smoother transition. If the club can land Kerkez for around £40-45 million, it could be one of the smartest signings of the window.
